Biel is a city of modern sculpture. The Swiss Sculpture Exhibition, the oldest and largest of its kind in the country, contributes to this international reputation. It has been held in Biel since 1954. For its 70th year, ‘Re/Sculpture’ looks at the history of exhibitions and their posterity. The exhibition, which opens on Friday 24 August at the NMB Nouveau Musée Bienne, is told from the point of view of the public who once visited the exhibitions and now live with the traces they have left behind. From abstract works of art from the 1950s and 1960s to the Robert Walser sculpture, the content of each edition has been the subject of intense discussion. Art needs an audience. Audiences are born of art. Between its heritage and its vision of the future, Biel is sculpture.
